Food that you would typically find at your normal everyday BBQ/barbecue restaurant includes brisket, pulled pork, baby back ribs and the like. Hogs R Wild BBQ, a restaurant located in Kosciusko County in Warsaw (in the former Chicago DogHouse building), don’t appear to prefer doing things the typical way. If their menu is any indication, they would prefer to turn the local BBQ scene upside down and figure out how they can make a typical BBQ menu anything but.
Located at 1527 N. Detroit Street just south of the bowling alley, Hogs R Wild BBQ’s menu includes barbecue mainstays such as the aforementioned brisket, pulled pork and baby back ribs. Along with those dishes, you will find pulled chicken and sliced turkey. The turkey, pork and chicken can be served on a brioche bun, as a plate, stuffed into a baked potato or wrapped in a jalapeno cheddar tortilla to make a burrito. Normal sides and kids menu items are also available.
Where the menu really starts to set itself apart, though, is in the egg rolls and wontons. Yes, you can get egg rolls and wontons at a barbecue restaurant. Offering a “Pulled Pork Egg Roll” and “Buffalo Chicken Wonton,” Hogs R Wild decided to get a little wild with its menu. The results are impressive. We ordered the egg rolls and wontons and were blown away by how good they tasted. My Vietnamese half will always swear off egg rolls unless they’re served wrapped in rice paper. One bite into Hogs R Wild’s take on this classic Asian dish, though, and I was hooked. The wontons, something I normally drown in dipping sauce, required no extra accoutrements and more than stood on their own.
Hogs R Wild takes advantage of their daily specials to push the proverbial barbecue envelope. Their massively popular tenderloin sandwiches, brisket chili and loaded nachos might not cause a double take when perusing their specials. The Buffalo Chicken Flautas and tacos stuffed with choice of meat, however will certainly have you wondering whether you’ve hit up a barbecue or Mexican establishment. Rest assured, it doesn’t matter. Whatever Hogs R Wild decides to put on their menu or offer as a daily special, you won’t be disappointed.
