For longtime fans of Oku Roji, a Japanese restaurant located in downtow Warsaw, Indiana, there’s finally a little light at the end of the sushi-shaped tunnel.
After months of wondering whether the beloved downtown Warsaw basement spot was gone for good, a new sign posted in the restaurant’s window suggests something a lot of people hoped to see: Oku Roji is hiring. And around here, “now hiring” usually means one thing — they’re getting ready to fire the burners back up.

Back in November of 2024, Oku Roji announced it would be closing as neighboring business The River Coffeehouse expanded into the space. At the time, the future of Oku Roji felt pretty uncertain, especially for locals who considered it one of the most unique dining experiences in Kosciusko County.
And honestly? There really isn’t another place around here quite like it.
From the hidden-below-street-level vibe to the cozy alleyway-inspired atmosphere, Oku Roji always felt less like “going out to eat” and more like stumbling into a tiny Tokyo side street after getting lost in the best possible way. It became a go-to spot for date nights, celebrations, and those random Thursday nights where onigiri and Asahi just sounded better than cooking at home.

No official reopening date has been announced yet, but seeing signs of life again is enough to get people talking. And probably craving gyoza and ramen at the same time.
For downtown Warsaw, this feels like very good news.
Because some restaurants close .. but the really good ones? They tend to find their way back.
