Finding authentic Caribbean food in northern Indiana isn’t exactly easy. So when Piña & Coconut relocated to the former Yamato Steakhouse building in Warsaw, it immediately landed on my list of places to try.
My family finally made it over for dinner recently, and I walked away with one clear takeaway: the food absolutely delivers.

What We Ordered
Before our meals even arrived, each of us was served a small bowl of soup, complimentary with the meal. It was a nice surprise and a thoughtful way to start dinner.
My wife and I both ordered the Fried Jack with Chicken, which seemed to be one of the most popular dishes in the restaurant that night. Even with only a handful of occupied tables, several other diners ordered the same thing.
After the first bite, it was easy to see why.

The fried jack was crisp on the outside while staying light and soft inside. Paired with the well-seasoned chicken, it made for a meal that felt authentic and full of flavor without trying too hard.
The portions were excellent, too.
In fact, my wife and I easily could have split one order and both left full. If you’re trying to stretch the dining budget a little, that’s worth keeping in mind.
Our kids split the Jerk Chicken, and there wasn’t much left when they finished. It had plenty of flavor without being overwhelmingly spicy, making it approachable for just about anyone.

Between the complimentary soup, generous portions, and reasonable menu prices, Piña & Coconut offers a lot of value.

The Atmosphere
If you’ve eaten at Yamato Steakhouse before, the space will feel familiar.
Piña & Coconut has kept many of the attributes of the former restaurant, and honestly, that works just fine. The setting is clean, comfortable, and relaxed. It feels casual without feeling thrown together.
The Service
The service was friendly throughout the evening, though it was a little slower than we expected.
We arrived right around opening time, and it took well over 45 minutes from the time we placed our order until the food reached our table.
I’m willing to give them some grace there. Arriving right as a restaurant opens can sometimes mean the kitchen is still settling into its rhythm for the evening.
It wasn’t enough to take away from the meal, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re trying to fit dinner in before another commitment.
One Thing to Know Before You Go
One thing caught us off guard, and it’s worth mentioning simply so there aren’t any surprises.
When our waiter asked what we’d like to drink, all four of us said water, assuming that meant tap water like it does at most restaurants. Instead, four bottles of water arrived at the table.
As I looked over the menu, I noticed they were listed at $4 each. I asked if we could switch to tap water instead, but was told the charge would remain the same.
Whether you agree with the policy or not, it’s something families should know before they visit. A family of four can add $16 to the bill before ordering anything else.
For us, it didn’t take away from how much we enjoyed the food. It was simply an unexpected surprise that’s worth knowing about, especially for anyone dining on a budget.

Final Thoughts
I’d absolutely go back to Piña & Coconut.
The food was authentic, flavorful, generously portioned, and fairly priced. That’s a combination that’s hard to argue with.
If you’re looking to try something different from the usual burgers, pizza, or Mexican fare around Warsaw, Piña & Coconut deserves a spot on your list.
Just be aware of the drink policy before you go, and you’ll know exactly what to expect.
