The pandemic has taken a toll on a variety of industries. From international conglomerates to mom and pop shops, no one has been immune. One of those industries near and dear to my heart, and why this blog exists in the first place, is the restaurant industry.
The number of restaurants having to close their doors because of the pandemic is staggering. An article from WRTV in Indianapolis reported that nearly 20% of Indiana’s restaurants have closed since March. That’s one out of every five restaurants in the state. The article also referenced a report from the National Restaurant Association and stated that “33% of Indiana restaurant operators said it would be “unlikely” their restaurants would still be in business six months from now ….”
I don’t know what the answer is or how to stop the bleeding. That’s not the point of this article. The point is to put a name to those numbers and maybe, just maybe, that human touch will spur action from someone somewhere to do something. If we don’t, your favorite restaurant or bar might be next … if it hasn’t closed already.
Each of the below restaurants has closed or has announced their closing for one reason or another this year (all are in Indiana unless otherwise specified). The cause of the closures for the vast majority of them can be attributed to the current pandemic. Each of these restaurants was owned by people who employed family, friends and community members and maybe even people you know. Let that sink in and then let’s get to figuring out what needs to be done to save our restaurants.
The list will be updated as needed.
